Senior Cru with Youth Fizz as YCBC sparkle at Regional Championships
Tuesday, 15 May 2012 21:20
At the recent Youth & Senior North East Regional Championships held at Sunderland Aquatics Centre, it was the senior members of York City Baths Club who showed that quality and performance is present at any age - if you are dedicated to make the most of it.
Sarah Lambert was in superb form, winning Gold Medals outright in both the 50m Backstroke and Freestyle whilst taking the seniors Gold in the 100m Back. Danny Martland was also a outright Gold medal winner in the 50m Back, closely followed by Bradley Swainston, with a seniors Silver. Bradley also matched that with senior Silver in the 50m Freestyle, where he was followed home by Xavier Edmonds-Allen, winning a senior Bronze. James Wilby, in his last year in the Youth age group, was not to be overshadowed though. James won Gold medals in both 50m and 100m Breaststroke events and added Bronze in the 200m Breaststroke. Sam Rainton won a Bronze in the 50m Backstroke, as well as 7th place in the 200m Backstroke.
Congratulations too to Anna Ward who came 9th in the 50m Butterfly final. Matthew Dearlove also competed, in the 200m breaststroke, and whilst not making the finals, he posted a personal best time. His was one of 15 personal bests registered by the 8 strong team, with a magnificent seven being posted in Finals swims. Finally, special mention to Sarah Lambert who, in winning the 50m backstroke event in a time of 30.94 seconds, broke through the 31 second barrier, bettering her previous best which had stood for 10 years. Now that is testament to a determination that you can always believe in being better!
YCBC swimmers impress at Derventio Meet
Friday, 11 May 2012 17:06
Over the weekend of 28th and 29th April, YCBC had a 16 strong squad of swimmers at the Derventio Xcel Open Meet at Ponds Forge, Sheffield. With its usual high quality participants, this gala was a true test of our swimmers credentials and they did not disappoint. At one stage, in the Ladies 400m Freestyle event, in four successive heats it was a YCBC swimmer who lead the field home. The stadium announcer was heard to praise both our swimmers and coaching staff and we do too.
Out of 60 swims no less than 38 were personal best times, with Olivia Garnett gaining PBs in each of her 5 swims. And that was no mean feat in her 200m I.M. swim. Due to delay on the way to Sheffield, Olivia arrived, changed and rushed through to marshalling just minutes before her swim. Surely a cool customer to then swim faster than ever before. Lucy Nicholson was a three-time Age group winner, winning both 200m and 400m Freestyle events, and the 100m Butterfly. Lucy also came third in the 200m Backstroke. Her 400m Freestyle winning time also saw Lucy achieve her National Qualifying time. Annie Johnston was also winner of her 400m Freestyle age group, but just missed out on achieving the national qualifying target this time. Other medal winners included Neola Thorpe with Bronze medals in both the 100m Freestyle and 200m I.M., a heat in which she lead throughout, knocking 10 seconds off her PB and making her North –East Regional qualifying time. Freya Beck also won Bronze, in the 100m Backstroke. Congratulations to the following YCBC swimmers – Aaron Perry, Alex Perry, Nicole Grenier, Carrie Suddes, Ellen Suddes, Anna Ward, Genna Suddes, Molly Peterson, Charisse Charlton, Katarina Bonner and Sam Rainton - for giving all the other swimmers such good competition

YCBC Youngsters star at Minster Meet
Thursday, 03 May 2012 21:27
York City Baths Club had a number of newcomers to competitive swimming at the recent B/C Grade Minster Meet held at Beverley, hosted by Doncaster Dartes. And they did not disappoint, with many excellent swims. An overall placing of 8th out of 28 competing clubs (and comfortably the best performing York based club) was a great performance from the 20 member team.
Debutant 9 year old Alfie Evans took Silver in the 50m Freestyle (B), and Bronze in the 100m Individual Medley (B) as well as 4th in the 50m Breaststroke (B). This made him runner-up of the 9 year old Boys competing. Not bad for the first time and we hope the beginning of great competitive swimming with YCBC.
Other performances of note from our 9 year old swimmers were: Libby Hogg, who won Gold in the 50m Breaststroke (B) and was handed a ‘speeding ticket’ in the 50m Backstroke (B); Emma Dorland winning silver in the 50m Butterfly (C); Lydia Whitham also receiving a ‘speeding ticket’ in the 50m Freestyle (C) and was 5th in the 100m Individual Medley (B); Jessica Armes also made her debut in competitive swimming at the meet.
In the 10 year age group, Molly Jones took Silver in the 50m Breaststroke (B) and received a ‘speeding ticket’ in the 50m Backstroke (C) as well as 5th in the 100m Individual Medley (B). Emma Gibbs took Bronze in the 50m Backstroke (B) as well as 4th in the 100m Individual Medley (B) and 5th in the 50m Breaststroke (C). Charlotte Middleton received a handful of ‘speeding tickets’, in the 100m Individual Medley (C), 50m Backstroke (C) and 50m Breaststroke (C). Hannah Roberts-Clark was also handed a ‘speeding ticket’, in the 100m Individual Medley (C), and came 5th in the 50m Butterfly (C).
Of the more established swimmers competing, most notable performances were from:
Ethan Redmond, who took Gold in the 11/12 yrs 50m Breaststroke (B) and ‘speeding ticket’ in the 50m Backstroke (C), as well as placed 5th in the 100m Individual Medley (B);
George Hogg received a ‘speeding ticket’ in the 11/12 yrs 50m Butterfly (C) but won Gold in the 50m Freestyle (C), and was 6th in the 50m Breaststroke (B);
12yr old David Grieves came 5th in the 50m Backstroke (C) and Isobel McLaughlan (also 12) was 6th in the 50m Breaststroke (C);
Christian Brennan won Gold in the 13/14 yrs 50m freestyle (C) and Alex Scadding took Silver in the 13/14yrs 50m Backstroke (C);
Lydia Miller won gold in the 50m Freestyle (C) and received a ‘speeding ticket’ in the 14/15yrs 50m Butterfly (C), whilst Kayleigh Brown came 6th in the 15yrs and over 50m Breaststroke (C).
Other Personal Best Times were posted by Robert Fox, Daisy Ivel, Esther Rhodes and Meghan Scadding.
Well done to all the swimmers who competed.
Hydro – powers YCBC swimmers to success
Thursday, 03 May 2012 21:24
Over the weekend of 21/22 April, York City Baths Club swimmers competed at the Harrogate Hydro in the Spa Town Graded (A/B) Meet. A team of 24 swimmers, ranging from 10 to 21 years of age, were there to race against quality opposition drawn from the North of England. And the YCBC team were in excellent form winning 37 Gold, 21 Silver and 14 Bronze medals, plus a further 46 top-eight places, across the Grades and age groups.
The Gold medals were shared out among 16 YCBC swimmers. Pride of place goes to 14 year old Sophie Brown who won five. Fellow 14 year olds Ellen Suddes, who won 4 Golds and Olivia Garnett, who won 3, made this the most successful age group for the team. Ellen’s sisters, 13 year old Carrie with two Golds and 11 year old Genna with 3 Golds made it a successful event for the Suddes family. Whilst for the YCBC boys it was the older ones – 15 year olds Ben Nicholson and Drew Langan who each won 3 Golds, as did 13 year old Conor Hargreaves. 12 year old Jack Pears-Dorland and 11 year old Jack Mayfield both bagged a pair of Gold medals each. Another winner of a brace of Golds was 10 year old Amy Durrant, the team’s youngest member. Other Gold medallists were Elise Langan, Hannah Baker, Charisse Charlton, Lucy Recchia and Jake Galley.
The Silver medals were also well shared around with 13 year old Molly Peterson winning 3. Fellow 13 year old Annabel Gibbs, 14 year old Jess Isaacs (with 2), and Alice Carty were also Silver medal winners for the girls. For the boys it was Conor Hargreaves who matched his Gold haul with 3 Silvers and that total was equalled by Jack Pears-Dorland.
Bronze medallists included Charisse Carlton, with 3, a number matched by Alice Carty. 11 year old Stafford Swainston and 16 year old Kayleigh Brown (with 2) were also Bronze medal winners.
As can be seen there were great performances by many swimmers but the outstanding female YCBC swimmer of the Meet has to be 11 year old Genna Suddes who in her 8 swims only once failed to make a medal winning position. Her haul of 3 Golds, 2 Silvers and 2 Bronze was just reward for such consistency. For the boys it was 12 year old Jack Pears-Dorland, who swam the most events of any YCBC swimmer – 9 in all – and only once finished outside the top four places. Another fantastic consistency of performance. A very well done to all the swimmers who competed

National Standards for YCBC at Premier Meet
Friday, 20 April 2012 22:14
National Standards for YCBC at Premier Meet
At the recent and ever popular City of Sheffield swim Squad Premier Meet, at Ponds Forge, Sheffield, York City baths Club swimmers were in excellent form as they continued their quest for qualifying times for Regional and National Finals later in the year.
Best performer was 18 year old James Wilby. Much better known as a breaststroke swimmer (and past National Champion no less), it was the Individual Medley over both 200m and 400m distances that James met the National qualifying standard. A not unnaturally proud mum was heard to exclaim “It’s brilliant! James has never qualified at National level for anything other than breaststroke – and now he’s got two others in the same weekend!” And James was not alone, with several other York swimmers reaching the standards they required. 11 year old Lucy Nicholson started the weekend in a fantastic way. On the Friday evening, she swam the 800m breaching the NQT with a whopping 19 second PB. At the other end of the weekend it was 13 year old Freya Beck who, in two determined 100m swims, first captured the Backstroke NQT and then rounded her meet off securing the time for the Freestyle. In between there was success for Bradley Swainston who achieved his NQT for the 50m Backstroke and for 14 year old Annie Johnston. Annie demolished her PBs in both the 200m and 400m I.M. events to gain her NQTs, These take her to eight NQTs for this year, thus setting a new club record for the individual number of such qualifications for one year.
There were a number of other notable performances from other YCBC squad members – particularly a great 100m Fly from Anna Ward which was has left her just under a second away from her NQT. Congratulations also to Genna Suddes, Katarina Bonner, Carrie Suddes, Sam Russell, Alistair Mitchell and Tom Sutton, as they bettered personal times over the weekend.

Lucy Leads Way For YCBC Success in Yorkshire Galas
Friday, 02 March 2012 23:07

York City Baths Club was again the leading club representing the city in Leeds over recent weekends for the first two in the series of galas for the Yorkshire County Long Course Championship. Concentrating on individual events, a total of 35 swimmers from YCBC competed.
It was the first county championships for 9 year olds Amy Corcoran and James Jeal and they did themselves and the club proud. Jeal is now County Champion in the 200m I.M., 200m Breaststroke and 200m Backstroke, as well as earning 4th place in the 200m Freestyle. Corcoran put in some determined swims to earn Silver medals in the 200m I.M. and 200m Breaststroke along with Bronze medals for the 200m Backstroke and 200m Freestyle.
Star performer was 11 year old Lucy Nicholson with a magnificent 7 Gold medals (100m and 200m Butterfly, 200m Back, 200m, 400m and 800m Free, and 400m I.M.) as well as Bronze medals in 100m Back and 200m I.M. and no less than 11 Personal Best times (PBs) over the 2 galas. Other medal winners were Freya Beck (Gold medals in both 100m and 200m Back as well as 400m Free, a Silver in the 200m Free and a Bronze in the Open 200m Back), Carrie Suddes (Gold medals in both 100m and 200m Breaststroke events and Silver in 400m I.M.) Sam Russell (Silvers in 200m and 1500m Free and 400m I.M. events and Bronzes in 400m Free and 200m I.M.), Annie Johnston (Gold in 100m Breaststroke, Silver in 200m I.M. and Bronze in 200m Free), Sarah Lambert (Gold in Open 100m Backstroke) Danny Martland (Silver in Open 100m Back), Alistair Mitchell (Bronze in 100m Free) and James Wilby (Bronze in Open 200m I.M.). A superb total of 36 medals with 16 of them being Gold. Added to which a further 34 Top Ten places, including 28 finalist swims, was just reward for some determined swims from the following: Amy Durrant, Anna Ward, Genna Suddes, Katarina Bonner, Neola Thorpe, Olivia Garnett, Joe Brennan, Matty Dearlove, Drew Langan, and Sam Rainton. In total, 86 PBs were recorded, with Alistair Mitchell showing continued good form with 12 of his own. Congratulations also to Freya Beck (100m Backstroke) Annie Johnston (200m I.M. and 200m Freestyle), Lucy Nicholson (200m Butterfly) Danny Martland (100 Backstroke) and Sarah Lambert (100m Backstroke) for achieving their National Qualifying times during these galas.
Congratulations to all swimmers who had qualified for the events in these galas and swam so well. Best wishes to those swimming in the Sprints and Team events which conclude the Championships at Sheffield later this month
Formidable Freya‘s Fabulous Forge Form
Saturday, 11 February 2012 11:27
The annual ASA Zonal meet between the North East and North West Regions, is usually for those aiming for National qualifying times. However, in this Olympic year, the meet, held recently at Ponds Forge Sheffield, was the last time swimmers could qualify for the British Championships, doubling up as an Olympic trial, and to be held in the new Aquatics Centre in the Olympic Park in early March.
From the squad of 12 York City swimmers who qualified for this meet, the total of 38 swims yielded 16 Personal Best times, and there were 10 Final appearances to celebrate too. Carrie Suddes (100m Breaststroke), Sam Rainton (200m Backstroke), Sarah Lambert (100m Backstroke) made a final each, James Wilby made two finals (100m and 200m breaststroke events) and gained a bronze medal . Annie Johnston made three finals (400m I.M., 100m Freestyle and 100m Breaststroke) and also gained a bronze medal. Freya Beck achieved a final place in the 200m Backstroke and won a silver medal in the 800m Freestyle; an achievement all the better being a 13 year old beating off several 14 year olds to the medal. Against the best swimmers from across the North of England it was great to see some determined performances. Congratulations to Jonathon White, Mathew Dearlove, Drew Langan and Lucy Nicholson who all posted PBs in each swim they had. In addition, Lucy’s 200m Fly swim was good enough to meet the National qualifying time; so too were Annie Johnston’s swims in both the 200m Fly and 100m Freestyle. However, a report of the times achieved, final places gained and even medals won can sometimes do little justice. Every so often being there and seeing a swimmer perform is the real story. And that was the case for Freya Beck at this meet.

Pictured above are Lucy Nicholson, Ellen Suddes, Annie Johnston, Freya Beck, Tony Brown from East Coast Trains ltd, Drew Langan, Matty Dearlove, James Wilby, Sam Russell, Carrie Suddes
Coming into the competition, Freya had had a testing time – not quite building upon her performances of last summer. In her primary event, the 200m backstroke, a determined yet unspectacular heat swim was good enough to make the final yet even in that, Freya was off the pace as she turned for the last 50m. Then the turbo kicked in and, with a final blistering 36 second length, Freya was home in 2:24.13. Finally a PB after months of trying, but better still it was fast enough to meet the British Championship qualifying time. Freya had a further British Championship target in the 400m Freestyle but that was not to be, and it looked like she would have to settle for the one swim in the Olympic pool next month. After all, she only had the 800m Freestyle left to swim and was some 7 seconds off the qualifying time. The advice from her York City coach, Dawn Martland, was to go out there with determination and keep pace with her fellow competitors. The next 9 minutes and 19 seconds was later described by her coach as “one of the best textbook swims I’ve ever seen”. After a dashing start, Freya settled into a good tempo and reeled in her fellow swimmers, then with steady acceleration pulled away. With a second 400m some 3 seconds faster than her first 400m, Freya was cheered home by many more than just the partisan and proud York City family of fellow swimmers and supporters. The British Championships qualifying time was beaten by some 3 seconds. Freya has a silver medal to recognise her achievement on the day but it will be the chance to swim in the same event as her inspiration, one Rebecca Adlington, in the 2012 Olympic Trials that is her real reward. Congratulations to all YCBC swimmers who swam so well at this meet and best wishes to Freya Beck and James Wilby (who achieved his qualification earlier in the season) as they prepare to represent their City in the 2012 Olympic Trials next month.

NER SC Galas Report
Saturday, 17 December 2011 18:15

The recent North East Region Swimming Association Short Course Championships were held at the Aquatics Centre, Sunderland, where the versatility of the facility, providing two separate 25m pools, allowed both the Age Group and Open Championships to happen simultaneously. For those spectators willing to brave the chill in an early morning queue, seats between the pools gave for almost unbroken and sometimes simultaneous cheering on of York City Baths Club swimmers.
From a squad of 20 swimmers who qualified for these Championships, a total of 105 swims yielded 59 Personal Best times, and there were 13 Final appearances in the Senior & Junior Gala to celebrate too. With the best swimmers from clubs from across the North East presenting strong competition, it is great to celebrate several North East Region Champions.
In the Senior Championships, James Wilby was crowned Champion in both the 100m & 200m Breaststroke events, and added a Bronze in the 50m sprint too. There were also podium finishes for Bradley Swainston (Silver in the 50m Backstroke) and twice for Sarah Lambert (Silvers in both 50m and 100m Backstroke events). A further 7 Final places, including 4 for a consistent Sam Rainton, enabled the Junior and Senior swimmers to come home with 25 PBs out of 51 swims. Also mention must be made of Bradley Swainston’s 57.95 seconds time in the 100m Backstroke final. Though only 4th place in the race, it was Bradley’s National Qualifying time, so particular congratulations for breaking this barrier.
In the Age Group competition, YCBC is proud to have 3 Age Group champions.
In the 11yr old girls competition, Lucy Nicholson won the 200m Butterfly event. With 2 Bronze medals (in the 100m Butterfly and 400m Individual Medley events) and 3 top ten finishes in her other swims, Lucy was a well deserved 4th place in the overall age group competition.
In the 13yr old girls competition, Freya Beck won the 200m Backstroke and 400m Freestyle events, took Silvers in the 100m Backstroke and 200m and 800m Freestyle and 10th in the 100m Freestyle. However, in a competition that she has always done well in, it was 13 year old Annie Johnston who was our top performer. Consistent medal places in all her seven events gave Annie a very well deserved 1st place in the overall age group competition. Annie won Gold medals in the 100m and 200m Freestyle and the 200m Individual Medley, Silvers in both the 100m and 200m Breaststroke events as well as 100m Butterfly and a Bronze in the 200m fly. 12 year old Carrie Suddes won a Silver medal in the 100m and a Bronze in the 200m Breaststroke events, as well as a further top ten finish. Though not quite attaining a podium finish, Sam Russell’s perseverance saw him achieve 5th place in the overall 10 year old boys’ age group competition. With other top ten finishes for Genna Suddes (4), Katarina Bonner, Sam Russell (7), Jonathon White and Alistair Mitchell (2), the nine Age Group swimmers achieved 34 PBs out of their 54 swims.
